My Ubuntu Car PC

Friendly, Free and Open Source

Two bateries are better than one!

By Paulo Jacob on Nov 12, 2008 | In The Car PC | Send feedback »

Just got rid of the CDROM. Not really useful and I'm better off with a second battery as I get more running time when the car is not charging.

New radio stations added

By Paulo Jacob on Jul 16, 2008 | In The Car PC | Send feedback »

New radio stations available: RTE 2Xm, RTE Pulse, RTE News, RTE Gold, RTE Junior and RTE Choice.
The "Pulse" station is interesting as it plays dance music 24h non-stop. RTE News plays the same news bulletin for one hour. Its good as I can listen to the "current" bulletin when ever I want (not just at the hour).
Also changed the script that downloads the phone list at the start, because when there is not internet connection available, the current list simply gets deleted.
Pictures will be available soon.

Finally figured out why the PC was starting/stopping

By Paulo Jacob on Jul 9, 2008 | In The Car PC | Send feedback »

This was a weird one!
At first I thought it was the jack connections but today I realized that if I knocked on the lid of the laptop it would start or stop by itself.
When I opened the lid I realized that the connection cables were crossing and with the pressure of the lid and the road got the protective layer on the cables to wear off and when the pressure on the lid was right they would touch and connect.
Just had to move the cables apart and the issue was fixed!

Direct dialing

By Paulo Jacob on Jul 5, 2008 | In The Car PC | Send feedback »

Today I added a keypad to the internet phone so I now can dial any number that is not predefined. Looks really nice! :)
Thanks to Elegidito for posting a script where this dialler was based on.

You can find my version here.

Wireless network up and running!

By Paulo Jacob on Jun 27, 2008 | In The Car PC | Send feedback »

The wireless access point is up and running. The network ESSID is "ubuntucar" and it has no encryption or access restrictions. I don't really think many people will be running after my car in search for free wireless access. :) But hey, if you find a wireless ap with this essid make sure to leave a comment!
The idea is not only to provide internet access to any machine inside the car but also to provide access to the mp3 and avi files stored on the car pc. This mean that instead of a DVD reader on the back seats I can have maybe an Assus EeePC (or something similar) and not having to worry about bringing any disc with me for the long trips with the children.
